01. Cool Olympic Canada: Hymini

Cool Olympic Canada: Hymini

By Wei Chen, Kamloops Coolhunt ‘10, Canada: HYmini is a handheld, universal charger/adapter device. It has an internal rechargeable battery that save power to charge most of your gadgets through USB, such as iPod, iPhone, MP3 player, GPS etc. As long as the product is able to use USB, then it can be used on HYmini.
The idea is that with its build-in generator, it capture winds to charge its internal battery. People can simply hold it in their hands in a windy place to charge the battery. It can also be attached on a bike or a snowboardhelmet, so the HYmini can also be charged when you’re in movement.
And it’s not just that. HYmini can also be charged by using solar panel, handcrank, and of course it can use conventional wall plug to charge.

Cool Olympic Canada: I Want to be the Snow Bum

-Insights from the Land of the Olympics-
By Katy Stowell, Kamloops Coolhunt ‘10, Canada:

Recently, I discovered a “job” on the Sun Peaks website that entails being the local designated “Snow Bum”.  This position is designed as a marketing tool for Sun Peaks to target today’s technologically inclined society who is connected through sites like Facebook and Twitter.  This position/competition is an excellent example of the rise of the social web.  The job description for the “Snow Bum” is as follows:
Have daily communication on social media platforms, including, but not limited to, Facebook™, Twitter™, YouTube™ and the official Snow Bum blog, among others.
Communication must be a mix of video, images and written content.
Participate in media stories about the contest or other Sun Peaks content. Besides the obligations of the job the great advantages are: being able to ski/snowboard as much as you want and use all the luxurious facilities of Sun Peaks. This is the more glamourous way of making a profession in (winter)sports, versus the honorable but hard-working ethics of the olympics.

Cool Olympic Canada: Sportsclothing and innovation

By Yousaf Tousif, Kamloops Coolhunt ‘10, Canada: This is a set of underwear which is created by NIKE, together with the Spanish soccerteam F.C Barcelona. The idea of creating this special set, which keeps the player away from cold, was taken into consideration when F.C Barcelona went to Russia to play a Champions League match. The temperature in Russia can be very harsh in wintertimes with temperatures somwhere around -30 degrees celsius.

Of course for the olympics every country put their best scientists to work to develop apparel to achieve new worldrecords. For example, the Dutch skate-team that doesn’t want to reveal exactly what their skatesuits are made of, but are hoping for a slight advantage and a bigger chance for gold.

04. Cool Olympic Canada: Geocaching

Cool Olympic Canada: Geocaching

By Ansari Azadeh, Kamloops Coolhunt ‘10, Canada: The Rise of the Social web - Geocaching.com
Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. There are 933,169 active caches worldwide!

Cool Olympic Canada: Justin.tv

-Insights from the Land of the Olympics-
By Wei Chen, from Kamloops Canada Coolhunt ‘10: Justin.tv is the largest online community for people to broadcast, watch and interact around live video. With 40 million unique visitors per month and over 500,000 channels broadcasting live video, Justin.tv is the leading live video site on the Web, enabling users to create real-time connections with others around the world. And most important, especially now, when everyone is gathering around the tube to watch as much olympics as possible, you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. Name it, they have it. Livestreams of the curling quarterfinals you’re unable to see because of the limited offer of your tv-provider. Or stream the opening ceremony live.

03. Sophisticated Surfstyle: Loud is Out!

Sophisticated Surfstyle: Loud is Out!

The 1930’s saw the rise of surf clubs in major surfing areas of California. By the 1950’s Dale Velzy opened California’s first surfboard shop in Manhattan Beach. Soon after, surfing exploded in popularity. Its growth never stopped. The extreme sports graphic/skate punk style look was the biggest in the 90’s and first years of the millennium. Surfing apparel companies in the US were being outplayed (with Volcom as the only exception) in their own game by casual label Hollister (owned by Abercrombie and Fitch) that made up a fictional surf hero (Hollister) situated at the core of the brand.  Action sports industry became trapped in its own success: the progressive surf-image was traded off for a conservative one (ever heard of a gay surfer?), soul was swapped for ‘loud and louder’. True DIY and punk spirit have been lost to a large extent. Surfing as a style phenomenon is here to stay though. The cool surf look for 2010 is the result of clever mixing and matching. It’s be a sixties inspired, preppy, toned down look. V-necks and chino’s. Loud is out. Simply buy a board, get yourself a wetsuit and you are out there. It¹s probably the most affordable experience of true freedom available. The new sound is: loud is out.

11. Niche Sportswear

Niche Sportswear

Sportswear is clearly back in fashion. However: think niche sports. Niche sports are more cool because they haven’t been claimed yet by commercial interests and mass consumerism. Great example is ping pong (http://www.spinyc.com) becoming a hip, urban underground sport in New York and Berlin, including gala tournaments and special events (endorsed by Fred Perry). Other examples are fishing (quite a few Scandic brands connecting to traditional design ranging from SNS Herring to Mads Norgaard) and roller skating.

Eurasian Student Top-25: Naomi Yotsumoto; Ponging in Style

By Judith Nielen, from IBMS Coolhunt ‘09: Naomi Yotsumoto is a professional Japanese table tennis player that wears colourful, self designed outfits during her matches. Her creations are inspired by Japanese (manga/Cosplay-)cartoons that have a big influence on Japanese youthculture. With her outfits she gets a lot of media attention and in the mean while disrupts her challengers. She gets the same attention as Anna Kournikova, Venus Williams, or Andre Agassi. She is a big trendsetter.

After Recession Top15 - Excelling by Being Yourself - And Going for It

Massimo Voltolina started practising sport only when he was 30. He trains without following rigid schedules: he simply “listens to his body”. At the age of 43 Massimo Voltolina is one of the two Italians that has swam from France to England across the Channel. He is now getting ready for his next adventure: crossing the Adriatic sea.

What we from Science of the Time found most attractive and inspiring in 2008 was not a gadget or whatever superficial thing people keeps running. It is cool in its simplicity and we hope it wil keep inspire people in 2009. Massimo Voltolina started practising sport only when he was 30 and he trains without following rigid schedules: he simply “listens to his body”. At the age of 43 Massimo Voltolina is one of the two Italians that has swam from France to England across the Channel. Of course, with worse weather conditions and a better timing. He is now getting ready for his next adventure: crossing the Adriatic sea.

Golf Republic

Golf Republic

Sander van Rooijen: My trend in ‘Cool Masculinity’ is Golf Republic. This is a new indoor golfcourse in Amsterdam-Zuid. The Golf Republic, and all indoor sportaccomodations, is a new trend in Holland. You can golf where-ever you want (it’s in a simulator), whenever you want an with who-ever you want! No more excuses because it’s raining, or people see you golf in silly clothes. Golf Republic is a new kind of playing sports your own way at your own time, with your own friends, in private!

Urban Wakeboarding

Urban Wakeboarding

Lodewijk de Vries: This happened yesterday evening. I was just hanging with my friends untill one of the guys rang the doorbell. He had the ingenius idea to take his boat and his wakeboard and try to wakeboard through the Prinsengracht. At first it seemed like a suicide mission, however they proved me wrong. This is the picture I took. It maybe hard to see but this is my friend (who prefers to remain anonymous) wakeboarding through the Prinsengracht.
Maybe this is the start of a new thing; urban wakeboarding!

Sensual Dancing

Sensual Dancing

Anne Oostra:
This picture shows three belly dancers. The woman in orange is a friend of my. Belly dancing is a way of showing and feeling 100% feminine. You become aware of yourself and your capabilities. Small, big, tall or origin does not matter. Belly dancing is coming up.

Lisanne:
Pole dancing/fitness
A real hype under woman is pole dancing/fitness. Women can express their body more, it’s sexy but sportive and off course it’s adventurous.
In Amsterdam there are a lot of pole dancing/fitness schools.
Here you can get lessons in pole dancing and pole fitness. Normally there were only a few pole dance schools but now it’s such a hype under woman that you can find the dancing schools in every part of Amsterdam.
I also discovered the trends wearing skinny jeans and the bob haircut under woman.

10. Howies

Howies

Howies are bringing out a jacket with which, if you want to buy it, you have to sign a contract saying when you have finished it you will hand it down to someone else. The company will store spare zips and so on for about 20 years in case it needs repairing.
